Lives often depend on the quick reaction and competent care of Emergency Medical
Technicians (EMTs) and paramedics. Incidents vary from automobile accidents to heart
attacks to slips and falls – which all require immediate medical attention. Essex
Valley Medical Transportation (EVMTS) has been providing high quality medical transportation
and support services for the city of East Orange and the surrounding communities
since 1987. This team of certified professional Emergency Medical Technicians responded
to over 225,000 requests for medical emergency assistance in 2007.
EVMTS is comprised of three divisions:
• Emergency Medical Services (EMS)
The Emergency Medical Services Division provides 911 Ambulance and Emergency Medical
Services to contracted municipalities. EVMTS is also responsible for the Emergency
Medical Dispatch (EMD) of the municipalities. Currently, EVMTS provides services
to the City of East Orange and the City of Orange.
• Non-Emergency Services (NES)
The Non-Emergency Services Division provides ambulances to patients who require
medical transportation. Each ambulance is certified by the State of New Jersey and
is staffed with two Emergency Medical Technicians, the same as the 911 ambulances.
• Essex Valley Training Institute (EVTI)
EVMTS has also ventured into First Responder and civilian training by creating the
Essex Valley Training Institute. The American Safety and Health Institute, National
Safety Programs and New Jersey Safety Programs have recognized EVTI as a training
center for their programs. Beginning in April of 2007, EVTI began hosting New Jersey
Emergency Medical Technician – Basic Courses and training new EMT’s. Through an
affiliation, EVTI is also a satellite training center for the American Heart Association.
